About

I'm Lorin Bruckner. I believe vegan food should taste good and look good. Cooking is a way for me to connect with history and my past, so there will always be a place in my heart for classic techniques and homestyle dishes.

I think it's important for my readers to know that I make sure every recipe is tested at least twice before it's posted here often by someone other than myself. Everything I create for this site is prepared to be eaten afterwards and is consumed by my husband, myself and occasionally a few of our friends.

My journey into cooking started simultaneously with my journey into veganism. When I first became vegan, I received a cookbook as a gift. It was called Vegan With a Vengeance by Isa Chandra Moskowitz, and I was really excited to start using it. I also realized I was never going to crack it open unless I intentionally made it a habit to start cooking regularly, so I promised myself that I would prepare one recipe a week.

That one recipe soon turned into three, and it became clear that cooking was a true joy for me. It was not only creative and fun, but a stress relieving activity that allowed me to spend time on my feet after a long day working in front of a computer. For this reason, I stopped shying away from time consuming or complicated recipes because time spent in the kitchen was no longer something I actually wanted to avoid. (Don't worry, though! I very consciously try to include quick and easy recipes on this site as well as a challenging adventure here and there.)

After amassing a huge collection of eclectic vegan cookbooks, I still felt like I was missing something. I wanted to know more about food and cooking itself - not just vegan cooking - particularly the traditions and history behind certain techniques and dishes I had never tried before. That's when I gave away all my cookbooks and started to create my own recipes. I decided to research dishes I was interested in and then find ways to make them vegan so I could learn more about cooking.

That endeavor lead me on exciting adventures I'm still taking part in today. The only difference? My tested recipes aren't just sitting alone and unshared on my hard drive. They're here for you to peruse, be inspired by, and maybe even test on your own. I'm so glad you've decided to join me on these adventures and hope you'll experience the same joy and fulfillment they've given me.
